Closed comedones, commonly known as closed pimples, typically result from overactive sebaceous glands in the hair follicles. Excessive keratinization at the follicle opening forms a cap, causing the opening to close. The sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands gets trapped in the follicle, forming small follicular bumps that do not have a visible opening on the surface.

Closed comedones usually appear as flesh-colored or transparent small bumps. They may be difficult to see from a distance but can be felt as small, uneven bumps when touched.
